Mr. Simo formed Simo Energy in August 2009, after resigning as president of a Dallas-based oil company. He held that position for nearly 10 years. His concentration during that time period revolved around a second truism, “Exposure” through horizontal drilling. He correctly believed the key to making commercial wells in abandoned fields was to maximize the pay zone exposure to the wellbore, followed by multiple frac jobs.
This concept of “Exposure” is still prevalent in Mr. Simo’s selection of prospects. Geologists and petroleum engineers learn very early in their careers that vast amounts of oil remain in the ground after fields are abandoned following the primary recovery phase. Recovering only 25% of the oil from a vertical well means that 75% remains in the ground waiting to be retrieved. Mr. Simo believes that an additional 25% of the total reserves can be recovered using horizontal drilling and completion methods.
